Why Moroccan Meteorites Are Famous

April 20265 min read

The Sahara is one of the best zones in the world to find meteorites. The land is dry, pale and flat. Dark stones are easy to see. Some stones have been resting on the surface for thousands of years.

The south of Morocco, around Erfoud and the Drâa basin, has a perfect mix of dry weather, open land, and many years of local knowledge. The result is a steady flow of finds, from common chondrites to rare Martian and Lunar stones.

When you see the name 'NWA' on a meteorite, it means 'Northwest Africa'. Many of the most famous Martian meteorites in science come from this region.
